A door used twice a day for fifty years racks up a lot of open-close cycles, and once the steel fatigues it doesn't give warning - it just lets go, usually while the door is mid-travel. Norco's climate doesn't put the same load on hardware that humidity or hard freeze cycles would elsewhere; this is a moderate-heat band, so rust and ice aren't driving the failures here the way they do in colder regions. The wear is mechanical, plain and simple: metal fatigue from decades of use on a house built before double-torsion setups were standard. On the older end of the local stock, you'll still find single-spring torsion bars sized for doors that have since been reinforced or replaced with heavier insulated panels, which puts even more strain on a spring already near the end of its life.
